Gaurav, a forty-year-old telecom GM, has been caught between deep blue sea on one side and a deep valley on the other. He hates his job and wants to leave it the first opportunity he gets, but unfortunately no one wants to hire him with his experience and the current salary. By now, many such Gaurav’s would have already hit your mind.
This is I call as “Golden Cage Syndrome” and let me demystify why such Gaurav’s land up in this situation. Gaurav graduated from a Tire 2 MBA college and joined a company in 2000, did sales in a IT Company for 2 Yrs. and moved to a telecom Company as Assistant Manager with a 60% hike.
As the industry was booming and revenue doubling every year, the organization also doled out good hikes and bonuses every year, with multiple hikes and multiple company jumps with in same industry, Gaurav moved to a GM position with a package closed to 70 lacs and with minimum skill upgradation and technically doing the same job for last 15 years with increase in volumes.
During this time, Gaurav also enhanced his lifestyle multifold times, invested in a 3BHK house, a car, family habituated for 2 vacations (one domestic and one overseas), with a weekend reservation for a Fine Dine. Ending up every month with very little saving and EMI to pay. So, today his lifestyle & EMI don’t allow him to leave the existing job and kills every day, expecting of a divine intervention and unable to get out of this Golden cage syndrome.
There are multiple options with Gaurav as to what he should do now with his stagnant career to get out of Golden Cage Syndrome:
- a) Should he take a pay cut a join a new company / industry.
- b) Upgrade/Retooling his skill sets by taking a break and doing an executive MBA.
- c) Continue with his existing job and sulk every moment.
- d) Start on his own.
The Golden Cage Syndrome is an extremely unfavorable situation to be in. The main purpose of this blog is to enlighten you about what could happen in future if you don’t prepare and do a long term career planning and get swayed by short term salary hikes& jumps.
